The previously developed concept of generalized potential surfaces is applied to a threehyphen;state model system with a single nuclear coordinate. For polyatomic systems the method is reformulated in internal coordinates. On the basis of SINDO1 calculations a qualitative explanation of the nuclear coupling between the ground and first excited state of azulene is given.
