摘要

Brackish Lake Obuchi in Rokkasho-Village, Aomori, Japan, is adjacent to nuclear fuel facilities, including a uranium enrichment plant, a low-level radioactive waste disposal facility, a vitrified waste (high-level) storage center and a nuclear spent-fuel reprocessing plant. The reprocessing plant is now under construction, and when in operation, small amounts of ra-dionuclides will be released from the plant. These ra-dionuclides may enter Lake Obuchi from the ocean by tides, from the watershed by rivers and from the atmosphere by fallout. The behaviour of these ra-dionuclides will be strongly influenced by environmental factors in the lake ecosystem. Moreover, there is concern about the deterioration of water quality due to residential drainage as the housing increases around Lake Obuchi. Therefore, evaluating the impact of released radioactive substances and the drainage on water quality is necessary to assess the safety of the surrounding environment.
