摘要

The deep Floridan Aquifer is the major water source for human use in west-central Florida, USA. Intense groundwater withdrawal near Tampa, Florida (Fig. 1), along with droughts, storm water diversion, road construction, and residential development has caused some local lake levels to decline (STEWART HUGHES 1974). Falling lake stages prompted the Southwest Florida Water Management District to authorize groundwater augmentation (i.e. pumping of deep aquifer water into affected surface water bodies) to maintain lake water levels. Some lakes have been augmented hydrologically for nearly 40 years. This practice has received special attention recently because pumped groundwater was shown to contain dissolved ~(226)Ra, and organisms in augmented lakes can display high ~(226)Ra activities (BRENNER et al. 2000).
