Hulu Terengganu was the first major hydro scheme in Peninsular Malaysia to be developed following the enactment of the Environmental Quality Act, 1974. A sustainable development plan was thus formulated to address current legal requirements, as well as to mitigate impacts which could have been caused by the scheme. Approaches were adopted covering environmental management, wildlife management, forest/flora conservation, aquatic ecology management as well as catchment management. This paper will focus on fish and fisheries management, and the associated enhancement in aquatic ecology, with a look at the economic and social advantages achieved.
