The ecological role of ciliates as trophic links in food webs has attracted recent interest (Putland 2000). Ciliates graze on autotrophic and heterotrophic pico-and nannoplankton, function as prey for larger zoo-plankton and planktivorous fish and contribute to the remineralization and cycling of nutrients (Azam et al. 1983). Many recent studies have shown that ciliates play an important trophic role in periphytic communities (Sleigh et al. 1992, Primc-Habdija et al. 1998). No research on periphytic ciliates in the transitional zones between land and water ecosystems currently exists; therefore, the goal of this research was to study the quantitative and qualitative structure of periphytic ciliates in various ecotones in the lakes of Polesie Lubelskie (eastern Poland).
