Laserhyphen;induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of the Mg(3s3pthinsp;1P1)sdot;Xe(1Pgr;1) larr;Mg(3s3sthinsp;1S0)sdot;Xe(Xthinsp;1Sgr;+) transition of the jethyphen;cooled MgXe complex have revealed that the groundXthinsp;1Sgr;+state is quite weakly bound (Delsquo;ape; 100 cmminus;1) compared to the1Pgr;1excited state (Dersquo;ape; 1500 cmminus;1), and that the bond length in the1Pgr;1excited state is some 1.5 Aring; shorter. Here we report the observation of dispersed fluorescence spectra from single vibrational levels of the1Pgr;1state, consisting mainly of oscillatory boundndash;free continua which extend over some 7500 cmminus;1. These spectra are analyzed using the semiclassical method of Child and LeRoy to determine the repulsive portion of the Mgsdot;Xe(Xthinsp;1Sgr;+) interaction potential up to nearly 1 eV in energy. Attempts were made to fit the experimental potential curves to several simple analytical functions, with a twohyphen;term Buckinghamhyphen;type function yielding the best representation. A comparison of the repulsive portion of the Mgsdot;Xe(Xthinsp;1Sgr;) potential curve with that of the analogous Nasdot;Xe(Xthinsp;2Sgr;) curve determined similarly by Zimmerman and cohyphen;workers shows that the Nasdot;Xe curve is evenlessrepulsive than the Mgsdot;Xe curve, even though the Mgsdot;Xe potential is itself quite lsquo;lsquo;soft.rsquo;rsquo; This can be rationalized by the ability of the more diffuse Na(3s) electron to lsquo;lsquo;backhyphen;polarizersquo;rsquo; (spsgr; hybridize) away from the Xe atom compared to the two Mg(3s2) electrons, thus reducing repulsion.
