The loading of an extrusion press using a hot shear has the advantage that the billets are continuously brought in and that the scrap quota is minimised. A problem does however occur when one of the sheared pieces, before or after the shear, has less than a critical length (e.g. 150 mm for a 6" billet): the piece could fall over during loading and block the press. Tecalex, a well-known manufacturer of plant and equipment for the aluminium industry, has developed an intelligent and advantageous way to utilise discards for billets. The origins of Tecalex reach back to 1965. The company started by constructing extrusion dies. This activity was continually expanded until the first extrusion press was built in 1984. In 2000 the new site for the head office of Tecalex in Sant Julia de Ramis, about 100 km north of Barcelona, was occupied. To be able to offer completed projects, employee numbers were increased to 60.
