As a follow up to the very successful symposium held in 1997, the Iron and Steel Society is sponsoring a second symposium, "New Melting Technologies II". This symposium will be held October 13-16, 2002 in Pittsburgh, Pa.The objective for this follow-up is to examine the progress in processes, then only nascent, and to highlight novel metal and slag reduction/melting technologies, as well as smelting and by-product recovery processes that have succeeded in the pilot plant stage or reached commercial application in the intervening time. The steel industry is undergoing dramatic changes. Smart implementation of new methods to reduce energy consumption and elemental losses will be the only way to succeed in the future.
