A major producer of aluminum products has recently installed a traveling aluminum log homogenizing furnace from Seco/Warwick Corporation. This new furnace is designed for a maximum batch load capacity of approximately 422,000 pounds and will process aluminum logs ranging from 9 inches to 18 inches in diameter, with typical lengths of 174 inches long. This five zone furnace is equipped with direct fired gas burners and sidewall mounted reversing axial flow fan assemblies for convection heat transfer. The reversing airflow, first patented by Sunbeam-Seco/Warwick in 1969, improves heating rates and load temperature uniformity. The temperature control system incorporates an Allen/Bradley family 5 PLC and a panel-mounted PC that runs Intellution process automation software for temperature control, data collection, monitoring and report generation.
