Palaeogeography and subrosion of the Werra Salt in the Hessian Depression, Zechstein, Germany

摘要

The primary extension of the Werra Salt (Werra Formation, Zechstein Group) in the Hessian Depression is determined by solution breccias in wells. In the course of time the area covered with salt was reduced to less than half of the original size due to subrosion. The palaeogeography of the Werra Fm and the impact of late Cretaceous tectonics and Miocene volcanism on the Permian morphology are reconstructed by the existence of previous salt deposits. Structures of the Variscan Mountains between the Rhenish Massif and the Harz Mts are analysed. Thuringian and Hessian depressions were in close connection both acting as parts of larger depocentre for the Werra salt sequence. Rock salt is dissolved up to 700 m below the recent surface, provided that groundwater has access to the salt by tectonic or volcanic dislocations or by fissures only.
