Conditions that shape the learning curve: Factors that increase the ability and opportunity to learn

摘要

It is observed from the literature that most of the earlier studies examined the factors that influence the learning curve in which firms adopt new products or technologies. Therefore, in this paper, efforts are made to examine the factors that increase both the ability and opportunity to learn in the firms that are in a matured setup. This helps to overcome the speculation that, in matured firms, there is no big scope for the factors to influence the learning curve. With this aim, several hypotheses are proposed and empirically tested based on the key influencing factors such as the percentage of temporary employees used, the level of excess capacity, the degree of heterogeneity, and the degree to which regions in a firm face problems in other important performance dimensions. It is observed that the findings from the hypotheses testing provide insight into strategies that help managers in designing work process to maintain a positive learning curve.
