Today it is hard to imagine, but until 1945 Katoomba in the Jurassic rainforest was a coal mine with its own kerosene and shale industry, and Scenic World was one of the sites operated by the Katoomba Coal and Shale Co. But even in those early mining days, hikers using the Federal Pass walking trail would arrive at the mine and ask to be allowed to ride up from the valley bottom in one of the coal skips, so as to avoid a section with a steep flight of steps.
