The recent CIMAC congress included several sessions on turbocharging, with most of the presentations being concerned with current developments and operational experience. Without doubt, one of the main driving forces behind new turbocharging developments is the need for emissions limitation. Future legislation is likely to look at not only a further reduction in oxides of nitrogen, but also limiting carbon emissions. These questions are not just attracting the attention of the turbocharger designers and manufacturers: the engine designers are looking at how turbocharging can work with other aspects of the engine to achieve the desired results.
