A nine-year stalemate between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defense over cleanup at Fort Meade should be resolved when a federal facilities agreement is signed this summer, according to an April 14 announcement by Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.).Fort Meade was placed on the EPA's National Priorities List of most contaminated sites in 1998. Federally owned sites on the list are required to sign a federal facilities agreement with EPA, but the U.S. Army has resisted since it was asked to do so in 2000, despite pressure from Congress, the state of Maryland, and other parties.
