There is a charming French expression, much loved by political commentators, which says that a particular issue has "invited itself" into an election campaign, i.e. nobody wanted it to come; it just gatecrashed the party of its own volition. Restructuring at Airbus has invited itself in no uncertain manner into this year's French presidential elections, with vote-hungry politicians of all persausions weighing in with their views or what's right and wrong with Europe's aerospace industry. The unions are also up in arms at the plan.
