At Shunan Works, stainless steels aremade by the T,D-VAC process. Chromium oxide formedduring decarburization refining in the LD converter isreduced by Si in a VOD vessel. To improve the efficiencyof the process and save resources, it is important toaccurately determine the required amount of Si.Therefore, the techniques for measuring the slag layerthickness in a ladle using an eddy current meniscussensor developed for long distance and techniques foranalyzing the chromium oxide content in slag wereinvestigated in order to accurately measure the amountof Cr2O3n in slag in a ladle. The results obtained are as follows:(1) By using the newly developed eddy current meniscussensor, a slag layer thickness of up to 400 mm couldbe measured. Moreover, the measured meniscus levelswere not affected by changes in slag thickness nor bynonmagnetic metal contents up to50mass in slag(2) Easily reducible oxides, such as Cr2O3, in slag weredistinguishable from difficulty reducible oxides byraising the temperature, thereby decomposing the oxides gradually.(3) The amounts of Cr2O3 in slag measured by the presenttechniques showed a good correlation with the amountsof Si oxidized in the VOD vessel,
