The Federation of American Scientists began gathering research about how technology could be used to transform education in 2001. They brought together researchers from academia, government and the corporate sector, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The team chose to create a biology game because of the need to engage more students in Science related fields. Immunology was chosen because high school teachers indicated that this is One of the most difficult subjects to present. Every object in the game functions as it should in nature, except for the fictional, cell-sized nanobot that a player pilots through the body. Care was taken to validate the information that comes from the "on board advisors" so that it helps the player play the game while being true to science.
