The required specification of a surge protection device, to meet requirements of a particular application, depends on lightning threat parameters and the circuit in which it will be installed. The parameters are the result of extensive lightning research and show that lightning current amplitudes of 200kA are possible. In the case of a lightning strike on the outer protection device of a building these amplitudes may occur. In case a low voltage power supply is hit by such a strike the lightning current at the building entrance should be grounded. Given symmetrical current partitioning in the low voltage plant, as well as a current partitioning in the ratio 1:1, between the current entering the building and the discharge by the surge protection device, the result would be 25kA per phase with a 4-phase system. The lightning current impulse sets free enormous energies. Therefore indication of its amplitude, charge and specific energy quota are part of the standardisation. For calculations, the impulse form is generally indicated with (10/350) μs.
