Aside from their applications in the fields of ion extraction, gas storage and molecular sensors, calixarenes have been extensively employed as ligands for metal complexation. Moreover, metallocalixnarenes have shown interesting catalytic activity in a plethora of reactions proving, in many cases, superior to other systems bearing different ligand scaffolds.
