The German mining machinery industry comprises of 120 manufacturing companies, mainly medium-sized. Some 95 of these firms are members of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and are represented in 60 countries worldwide. The industry employed approximately 16,500 people and earned estimated revenues of around 2.55 billion euros in 2006, of which exports contributed 2.12 billion euros. At this level, Germany ranked first among the world's mining machinery exporting countries with a world market share of 15 percent and the nation is also the world's second largest exporter of construction machinery. Around 50 mainly medium-sized companies German companies are world leaders in the processing of minerals, particularly sand, gravel and industrial minerals and of course coal. Today expertise in recycling plants for construction, glass and electronic waste is a major strength, as well as "clean coal" environmental technology for the processing and desulphurization of coal. Apart from complete industrial plants they provide crushers, mills, screening plants, separators and machines for wet processing. They make an important contribution to the low-cost extraction of resources and also to the environment. The industry employs about 10,000 people and produces mineral processing equipment worth 700 million euros annually, with exports accounting for 75 percent of sales.
