During December, Brazil's CVRD negotiated a 9.5 percent price increase for 2007 iron ore supply contracts with Asian customers. The new agreement covers all of the major iron ore buyers, including the Baosteel Group Corp. (Baosteel), the largest Chinese steelmaker, and China is the largest steel producer; Pohang Steel Corp. (Posco), the largest Korean steelmaker; and all Japanese steel mills, i.e., Nippon Steel Corp., JFE Steel Corp., Sumitomo Metals, Kobe Steel, and Nisshin Steel. As an outcome of these negotiations, FoB iron ore prices from Carajas and Minas Gerais will increase respectively to 0.7320 per dollars Fe unit per dry metric ton (dmt) and 0.7211 dollars/dmt. The Carajas mine is located in the Amazon region, while Minas Gerais is located in Brazil's central highlands. Iron units are an industry standard for the iron content in ore that must be further processed to extract the metal. As an example, an iron ore bearing 65 percent iron from Carajas iron would actually cost 47.58 dollars/mt.
