When Somerset pump manufacturer Marshalsea Hydraulics sought to increase its share of the offshore oh industry market, the company realised that to achieve this ft would need to extend the service life of its pumps. The pistons and seals of these pumps face severe demands, working at pressures in excess of 700 bars to supply equipment submerged at depths of 3000 metres or more. Marshalsea decided to coat the piston stems with Titanium Nitride (TiN) after plasma nitriding to ensure the coating has adequate support. With a hardness of more than 2000 HV, and extremely low coefficient of friction, the super-smooth TiN coating applied by Tecvac Limited quadrupled the average service life of the piston/seal assembly, for less than 3 per cent of the pump cost. This is a typical example of how advanced hard coatings can improve the performance of components in a "rubbing wear" situation. The idea is not new - hard chromium plate was known in the 19th Century, for example, but modem techniques such as PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) have extended the range of metals and compounds that can be deposited, offering engineers a wide range of existing properties and finishes.
