Because of a lack of prescriptive standards, machine tool safety is a grey area leaving much open to employer's interpretation.Ontario has tough rules for the safeguarding of machinery. Armed with generic language in legislation that calls on machinery to be "safeguarded against all hazards," the Ministry of Labour (MOL) has seemingly boundless power to say whether a machine should or should not be operated. For th most part, requirements of the legislation can be met by using one of the Canadian Standards Association's (CSA) safety standards for machinery. When applied correctly, these standards can ensure a high level of safety. They are available for devices like presses, robots and pressure vessels.
