Ted Dowdall BSc (Hons) CEng MIED, has been the Senior Structural Engineer for Spiral Staircase Systems, one of the UK's leading bespoke stair suppliers, for 20 years and explains why staircase design should not be the last item on the list for engineers and architects when considering a new development or the refurbishment of an existing building structure. Stairs are virtually an 'everyday item' to people who must be able to use them with confidence; if they are carefully and methodically designed, they can perform a life-saving function in the event of an emergency evacuation of a building, as well as remain a significant architectural feature.
