摘要

We often read of Government-funded research being aimed at blue-sky projects, with little immediate return or benefit; here we will look at a part-UK financed project aimed directly at assisting the European engineering industry in its search for improving its knowledge of materials. The Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) is an international research laboratory based in the French Alps, founded in 1967 by France and Germany and later joined by the UK. The ILL operates the most powerful neutron source in the world, feeding intense beams of neutrons to a suite of 40 high-performance science instruments. Around 1500 scientists visit the institute each year to perform cutting-edge scientific experiments. In order to maintain its position as a world-leading centre, it operates a regular upgrade and replacement procedure for all instruments. Instrument upgrades and replacements are financed from the ILL's annual budget, currently running at around 80M, of which approximately 25% comes from the UK via the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). In addition, collaborations are sometimes formed between ILL scientists and UK universities to allow for individual projects to benefit from further UK funding via EPSRC grants.
