In the first part of his article, Robin Read BSC(Hons) GradIED explores the application and design of robots built to interact with humans. As we have seen over the past few decades, interest in the world of robotics has been growing at an exponential rate, with the variety and number of application areas following a similar trend. To give some examples, we have sent robots to the deepest depths of our oceans, to neighbouring planets and into the depths of our solar system placed them in some of the cleanest environments that can be found, such as food processing plants and operating theatres, as well as some of the roughest environments around, joining various armed forces on the front lines of war zones. However, we are only just seeing the world of robotics venture into what is arguably the one of the most challenging environments as of yet: next to you and me, in our human society and home environments.
