Graham Jeffery looks back at some 'real engineering' design problems tackled by student projects. During the latter stages of a career of over 40 years with Rolls-Royce, until my early retirement in 2003, I was a mentor for engineering graduates passing through the company's training scheme at Bristol. Having been an engineering designer for the whole of my career, I naturally took an interest in the mechanical design aspects of the training programme. In becoming involved, my objective was to promote engineering design as a vocation and, in doing so, to pass on some of my knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. I took a particular interest in the 'design and make' projects that were part of the scheme, because, for me, these could be examples of real engineering design and creative problem solving.
