In order to remain viable during the 1990s successful companies have given special attention to the every increasing quality required by customers. Definitions of quality are considered and the question is asked whether quality will remain equally important in 2000 and beyond. The quality system used by many large, medium and small organisations is ISO 9000. The final version of the latest revision is ISO 9000 (2000), which will be published in fourth quarter of 2000. Many firms have been studying the draft standards as they have developed and are giving special attention to ensure that the relevant existing procedures will comply with the new standards. The origin and history of ISO 9000 (1994) and the major changes in ISO 9000 (2000) are reviewed. ISO 9000 is compared with total quality management (TQM), which is now often called business excellence. The similarities and differences between TQM and ISO 9000 and their benefits and criticisms are considered. Other aspects of quality during the first decade of the 21st century are examined. It is concluded that quality will continue to become more important each year.
