As builders of the emerging information society, engineers regularly promote the use of information technology. But how many of us have actually used these technologies ourselves? How many of us have had our complaints diagnosed over a broadband link several hundred kilometres long? How many of us generate or process electronic purchase orders and invoices? These questions prompted me to respond last March to a notice posted in can.infohighway that the University of Western Ontario would be conducting courses over the Internet during the spring semester. As a sometime contributor to professional journals, I was interested to see a course on writing. A few days later I was enrolled, and had received my login name, password and the outline of a 10-week course on Writing for Fun and Profit. I was joined in the course by nine others: a mixed bag of homemakers, actors, lawyers, engineers, editors, and a PhD candidate filling in time while his thesis was being read.
