In June 2006, DRS Technologies was awarded a USD396 million contract to provide rugged applique computer systems for the FBCB2-BFT program. Research & development will continue through 2009, and procurement will continue throughout the forecast period. For 2007, Forecast International has switched from forecasting production of the FBCB2 to forecasting funding. FBCB2-BFT is the primary digital command and control (C{sup}2) system of the U.S. Army at brigade level and below. It consists of computer hardware and software integrated into a variety of tactical vehicles in various configurations. Handcarried versions are in development. This system distributes situational awareness (SA) data, and passes command and control messages within and between brigades, with feeds all the way back to the Pentagon. It has become the premier C{sup}2 system in Iraq. Some officials wanted to change the name of the system, but as the system became more popular, the current name began to stick.
