1. Endpoint control is one of the biggest challenges facing BOF steelmaking, since it dictates shop performance in terms of productivity, cost and quality combined. For a shop to meet future challenges in these areas, it must put in place a reliable process control system that ensures high hit rates at turndown. 2. The MAP endpoint control concept requires a high degree of automation of BOF processes to provide accurate process data, reliable testing methods and fully standardized BOF practices using process models. In order to ensure improved turndown performance by this approach, setting the appropriate targets, tracking performance and continuously improving operating practices must become integral parts of the BOF operation. 3. A continuing effort is being made at several ArcelorMittal BOF shops to improve turndown performance. By applying the MAP endpoint control concept, it is possible to achieve benefits of lower reblows, improved temperature and chemistry control, and thus increase BOF productivity, reduce cost and improve product quality.
