The effect of midostaurin, a multiple tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with a severe form of the rare disease mastocytosis has only been evaluated in a single non-comparative trial in 116 patients. After half of these patients had been followed for a minimum of 3.5 years, midostaurin appeared to prolong survival in patients with mast cell leukaemia. No survival gain has been demonstrated in the other forms of mastocytosis. As limited data are available on its adverse effects, any disorders observed during midostaurin therapy should be systematically reported.
