Conceived as a carrier-borne light attack aircraft, the Douglas (McDonnell Douglas from 1964) A-4 Skyhawk - affectionately known as the 'Bantam Bomber' or the 'Scooter' - found worldwide use as a land-based attack aircraft. Designed to provide the US Navy and Marine Corps with a simple low-cost lightweight attack and ground-support aircraft, its designer, Ed Heinemann, drew on Korean War experience for the concept.
