THE China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China's third-largest oil firm, is looking at plans to build a 2,000-km long gas pipeline to link four big demand hubs on the booming east and south coasts of the country. Costing at least 1 billion dollar, the pipeline, which could be completed in about 10 years, would run from Shanghai in the east to Hainan Island at the southern tip of the country, and would be China's second-longest pipeline and second biggest in terms of investment after the 4.8-billion dollars, 4,000-km long West-East gas line currently being built from Xinjiang to Shanghai.
