Gill McShane travelled to Costa Rica to speak with Marco Vinicio Ruiz, the Minister of Foreign Trade, about the latest developments shaping the nation's fresh produce export industry. MR: Costa Rica is one of the oldest democracies in Latin America and has transformed its economy in the last 30 years. International trade has been evolving since the 1960s when the agriculture industry accounted for 80 per cent of Costa Rican exports, comprising bananas, coffee, sugar and some cattle. Today, the sectoris still going strong is continuing to diversify. Pineapples, for instance, have been developing solidly in the last 10 years. Agriculture now accounts for 12 per cent of Costa Rica's foreign trade. We export 4,000 different products to 150 countries around the world.
