The country's network of banana suppliers are refusing to allow economic difficulties both at home and abroad overshadow their export potential, says Natalia Henao of Banacol. NH: Export revenues have been seriously affected; for every box of bananaswe export we receive the same returns as 10 years ago, which is insufficient when you consider the rise in production, labour and transport costs during the last few years. To alleviate the situation, the Colombian government is providing financial aid to exporters through a programme called Guaranteed Agricultural Income (Agro Ingreso Seguro or AIS), which has been developed by the Ministry of Agriculture. Among various initiatives, the scheme provides soft loans, subsidies and support for certain projects such as the control against black sigatoka disease.
