Review of Probabilistic design methods for vertical breakwatersby H. Oumeraci, A. Kortenhaus, W. Allsop, M. de Groot, R. Crouch, H. Vrijling, and H. Voortman
This book presents a summary of an extensive research program carried out by members of the European Union under the Marine Science and Technology Research Program PROVERBS project (Probabilistic Design Tools for Vertical Breakwaters). The project provided extensive collaboration between members of the European Union in carrying out a review of existing design tools and in undertaking a significant body of new research to provide better estimates of the various design loads and associated design procedures for vertical breakwaters. The book offers an overall probabilistic design concept for these structures. The book is subdivided into six chapters. Each chapter is writ-ten by a separate author(s) and consequently the style of writing and the general layout and presentation does vary from chapter to chapter. It would be nice to see a summary section at the end of each of the four main technical chapters (Chapters 2 through 5). Chapter 1 provides the motivation for undertaking the PROVERBS study and gives a detailed summary of what is found in the following chapters. Chapter 2 offers a summary of the methods available for the determination of design wave conditions and wave loadings, including a separate discussion of pulsating wave loads, impact loads and broken wave loads. Chapter 3 deals with the various aspects of foundation design for vertical breakwaters and introduces several limit-states equations and un-certainty factors for foundation modeling. Chapter 4 provides in-formation on structural failure mechanisms of concrete caissons and provides references to relative building codes in various countries. Chapter 5 introduces the concept of probabilistic de-sign, provides two alternative methods that can be used, and includes several example problems using prototype structures. Finally, Chapter 6 provides conclusions from the PROVERB study related to Chapters 2 through 5. Several annexes are included at the end of the book that include a detailed description of the nomenclature, study partners, contents, list of the actual PROV-ERB reports, and a summary of final results of the PROVERB study.
