It was most gratifying to note that the 2008 George Sykes Memorial Prize was awarded to Dr Alexander Fedotov for his paper on the "Development of the Russian standard for air quality in hospitals" (Volume 13, Number 2, pages 31-35). In his presentation to the annual conference of the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Sciences Society on 16 October 2008, Dr Fedotov pointed to the absurd inconsistency of tight control over air quality in the manufacture of sterile products, whereas in many hospitals there is no such requirement, particularly in operating theatres where the potential hazard to patients is obviously very much greater.
