Protection, aesthetics and eco-friendliness. Architectural coatings are meant to possess all these properties. What a balancing act! Biocides and their approval is an issue that has hung over the European coatings industry for more than a decade. One thing is clear: the coatings must contain active ingredients, because no one wants a facade that is overgrown with fungi and algae. How much simpler life would be if the biocides were to remain permanently in the paint. Unfortunately, though, they are leached out by the rain, and so can end up in the groundwater and the environment.
