The historical background to the evolution of fabrics for military uniforms is reviewed together with some of the dyeing and finishing problems met. Changes from subjective to objective specification requirements following developments in test methods; from direct to indirect acceptance following developments in quality assurance procedures and in procurement are commented upon. Outstanding problems are discussed and recommendations made.
