Halogenated. Werner clathrates which contain Cl, Br, and I as part of the host and guest moieties have been synthesized and characterized by single X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and, solid-vapor kinetics of formation. The compounds derived from NiI2 are ionic; forming 1 salts and which yielded tri-iodide anions by the addition of I-2. Secondary interactions involving halogen center dot center dot center dot halogen and hydrogen bonds have been fully characterized and the structures were correlated with the thermal decomposition results.
