Around 26% of global metallurgical coal exports in 2016 are operating at a negative cash margin, encompassing 84 operations and 80Mt ofproduction. Approximately 42Mt of production has been removed from the market since 2011 due to the closure of loss-making minesfollowing the 70% fall in prices. The vast majority of these closures have occurred in Australia, Canada and the US, which together account for75% of total export production and will see many more closures while the market remains oversupplied.
