The metallurgical coal market was in freefall during August, as a weaker outlook for crude steelproduction in China continued, together with reports of Chinese steel mills running down their coalstockpiles. Despite weaker demand, supply continued to ramp up – hence the freefall in prices:premium HCC fell 17% from July to average US$170/t, and LVPCI fell 15% to US$119/t, whileSSCC has found some price support (from thermal coal prices) and only dropped 1% toUS$102/t.
