In January 2015, China introduced limits on trace elements for imported coals, including metallurgical coal, on environmental grounds. Thetesting is conducted when the cargo arrives in China, prior to unloading, and if the cargo passes, a CIQ certificate from local branches of theGeneral Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ)—China’s quality watchdog—is issued. Should the cargonot pass, customs clearance will be prohibited and the coal will be re-shipped back at the sellers’ expense. Currently, it takes up to a week fortest results to be determined.
