摘要

The NCEP (see appendix C for a list of acronyms) NARR is a long-term, dynamically consistent, high-resolution, high-frequency, atmospheric and land surface hydrology dataset for the North American domain. It covers the 25-yr period of 1979-2003 and isbeing continued in near-real time as the R-CDAS. Essential components of the system used to generate NARR are the lateral boundaries from and the data used for the NCEP-DOE Global Reanalysis, the NCEP Eta Model and its Data Assimilation System, a recentversion of the Noah land-surface model, and the use of numerous datasets additional to or improved compared to those of the global reanaly-ses. In particular, NARR has successfully assimilated high-quality and detailed precipitation observations into the atmospheric analysis. Consequently, the forcing to the land-surface model component of the system is more accurate than in previous reanalyses, so that NARR provides a much-improved analysis of land hydrology and land-atmosphere interaction. The overall atmospheric circulation throughout the troposphere has been substantially improved as well.
