In his article, Toby Carlson describes the deterioration of science funding procedures that he has experienced over the course of his career. As a young faculty member, I have not personally experienced the decline in the way Carlson has, but, as a scientist, I have a tendency to try and analyze and model phenomena even if I have not necessarily personally experienced them. It is in this spirit that I approached one of the main issues that Carlson describes: the escalation in the amount of time scientists spend writing grant proposals.
