A joint field trip between the Mineralogical Society (MINSA) and the Bushveld Branch of the Geological Society took place on 28-29~(th) June 2003 to examine discordant iron-rich ultramafic pegmatoids (IRUPs). The trip was organised by Grant Cawthorn and led by Roger Scoon and Andrew Mitchell. The group met at Tubatse Chrome Club at Steelpoort Manie Swart gave us a safety induction as we were on SAMANCOR ground, then without further ado we crossed the road to examine the little-known Spitzkop Pipe. After the briefest drive northwards we met up with Grant Hayward of Boynton Resources, who showed us core and outcrop from an intersection with IRUPs on the Farm Grootboom, and then up a steep track on the farm Grootboom where the UG2 outcropped around a hill of IRUR There were stunning views down to Steelpoort and along the Steelpoort Fault towards our next port of call, which was Kennedy's Vale. Such views can only be enjoyed here by the fortunate few. Kennedy's Vale is essentially a pegmatitic clinopyroxenite with a core of titaniferous magnetite which has a similar composition to magnetite in the Bushveld Upper Zone. The opportunity to look at core from as the mine was very much welcomed, as the mine is due to close in the near future, although it will still retain a processing capability for further extraction of vanadium from the Main Magnetite Layer.
