As I sit on the deck at Port Alfred and watch the whales frolicking in the sea below me, I have ask myself why geologists often find themselves in the most inhospitable places on earth. Yesterday I went out to sea and watched the seals, porpoises and penguins interacting with the sea and the waves, and I again wondered how geologists could work down a deep gold mine in the most impossible conditions, These two days make one think about the meaning of life. Geologists need to become a professional force and by becoming more professional, 'climb higher up the food chain', in the words of my colleague Claris Dreyer This is my first report as President of the Geological Society and I am very honored to be trusted with affairs of the Society for the forthcoming year. To Uwe, MANCO and Council, I hope I can fulfill the trust that has been placed in me as President, and that I am able to run the Society for my one-year term of office. The needs of the Society have changed over the years, and to accommodate these needs, Council approved a re-structuring of the administration so that the Society could be run more efficiently by a dedicated team of geologists and administration staff (see the following articles on office restructuring).
