Geologists have traditionally stayed away from contentious issues. We get on with our research or our work and leave the rest of the world to fight it out. Unfortunately for us, the "outside" world is where things happen and where decisions are taken that affect us directly and impact on us and our careers in the longer term. Having just returned from the Mining Indaba in Cape Town I have been reminded, again, that we cannot ignore national issues, without at least making some attempt to influence politicians, industrialists and the rest of society, especially when we are affected by their decisions and actions.
