THE Jwaneng mine lies on the perimeter of the Kgalagadi desert in Botswana, about 160 km from the capital city of Gaborone. The world's biggest diamond mine, it is managed by Debswana (a 50:50 joint venture between the Botswanan Government and De Beers Consolidated Mines). The operation is open-cast, comprising three diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes of varying grades, which are surrounded by laminated shales and dolerite intrusions in the north of the pit. Mining is carried out by drilling and blasting, with blasted material transported by haul truck to the waste dumps or crushers/stockpiles. Ore is further refined through a material treatment plant and diamonds are recovered and sorted at an automated plant. The existence of too long or too short blast-holes was a common phenomenon at Jwaneng. This was evidenced by the fact that a large percentage of split totals (number of explosives charged per hole) were out of specification compared with the planned charge per hole.
